Mandala means ‘circle’ in Sanskrit. Mandalas offer balancing visual elements, symbolising unity and harmony. The goal is to serve as a tool on our spiritual journey.
Kalachakra Mandalas – mean ‘Cycle of Time’. The Mandala is the residence of the Kalachakra deity – a fully enlightened being who stands in the center. Although depicted as flat, it is actually a 3 dimensional, 5 storey mansion. As meditational tools used by Buddhist practitioners, thangkas must be meticulously created according to Buddhist scriptures, which requires the painters to study in detail to accurately portray correct dimensions and geometric layout.
